Become a docent

“Being a docent at Tor House is rewarding and enriching. Jeffers’ home is a true literary treasure in our California backyard.”

Prof. George Lober, Naval Postgraduate School
Tour Docent 2005–2011

Tor House, the Carmel home of California's famous poet, Robinson Jeffers, is a National Historic Landmark and one of America's greatest literary treasures. We are seeking new docents to learn about Jeffers’ life, philosophy, and poetry and to lead tours of Tor House a few times a month, or at whatever time you can spare. We are excited to meet you.

Tour Docents learn about and share information about Jeffers’ life and family, his philosophy and poetry, and cultural artifacts built into the house and Hawk Tower by Jeffers himself.

After docent training, docents lead tours (once or twice a month) of Jeffers’ stone home (1919) and granite tower (1924), reciting poetry and educating visitors on the history of Tor House. Tor House Docents come from all over the greater Bay Area and Central Coast to share the beauty and wonder of Tor House.

Being a docent at Tor House is a very special experience. If you are interested in being a conduit of history and literature to our many wonderful international guests, contact programs@torhouse.org for more information.
