Bas Reliefs
Bas reliefs by Carol Courtney.
Hydro-stone: $ 50.00, Bronze: $750.00
(Approximate size 13"x14")
"They Made Their Dreams for Themselves"
@2005 Carol Matranga Courtney
In this bas relief the artist portrays Robinson Jeffers with his beloved wife
and muse, Una. The title, "They Made their Dreams for Themselves," is
taken from the wall in Una's room of the tower and was the philosophy that
guided their lives. The rustic stone carved motif is befitting of the poet's
love of nature and working with stone. The sculpture is a limited edition.
The mold will be destroyed after 75 copies are sold. It is available in either
bronze or a sturdy hydro-stone material. The hydro-stone is fortified and
sealed and comes ready to hang indoors or out.
Paper mache bas relief Unicorns
in a variety of finishes by Carla Almanza,
$50
Mexican-born
artist and sculptor, Carla Almanza, met and studied with the renowned
Venetian mask-maker, Agostino Dessi, when she was in her 20’s. She
brought the ancient art of paper mache mask-making with her when she and
her husband settled in California. Recently, she was asked to
re-create the sandstone unicorn bas relief that is set over the door to
Una Jeffers’ second-story room in Hawk Tower at Tor House. The
original sandstone figure has partially worn away over time.
Working with a picture of the original model for the unicorn, Almanza
created an exact replica of the bas relief using the same techniques she
uses for mask-making.
She has also created a number of smaller bas reliefs, using the same
technique and giving each a unique patina. The light paper mache
sculptures measure approximately 9” wide and 11” long.
